Services
Service to the community remains as important to IODE, as it did when the organization was founded in 1900. In 2019, funds expended on Service projects across all levels of IODE totaled approximately $1,734,147.00
Today, IODE Walter Baker Chapter, through our annual fundraising efforts, continues to provide financial assistance locally, and to communities in remote areas of Canada. Wherever there is a need - crisis centres, hospitals, schools, nursing homes, our members are there to help.

IODE Walter Baker Chapter Services Review for 2016:
We provided $2,500.00 to the Ottawa-Carleton Association for Persons with Developmental Disabilities (OCAPDD) for their "The Helping Hand Fund" (founded by our Chapter in 2011), a supplementary fund to help their residential clients pay for necessities, such as clothing, personal care items, household items, etc.
We regularly filled local school's "Food For Thought" cupboards, an emergency food supply for children who arrive at school with an inadequate lunch, or no lunch at all.
We supported Nelson House, Chrysalis House and Cornerstone, all women's emergency shelters with donations of new clothing, personal hygiene items, children's books and household goods.
We provided new wetsuits, life jackets and outdoor sports equipment to Camp Merrywood, an Easter Seals summer camp for children with disabilities.
We provided the Ottawa Mission for Men with clothing, winter outerwear and new cutlery, as well as supporting their Christmas Dinner and Christmas Food Hamper Programs;
We donated to our four local Food Banks, Operation Come Home, Harvest House, and the Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind.
We donated to several IODE Canada and IODE Ontario service projects and funds.

Past Services Projects:
IODE Totes For Hope Project
In 2012, thanks a generous partnership with Giant Tiger in Stittsville, we had a very successful, first ever BBQ & Bake Sale. From the proceeds we were able to donate $1,000.00 to Nelson House, a women's emergency shelter, to be put towards the
purchase of a emergency power generator. This costly piece of equipment is desperately needed to power the door locks and security systems of the building
during a power failure. When Nelson House opened it's doors in 1991, IODE Walter Baker Chapter donated all the major appliances. In 2010, when the original washing machine finally stopped working, the Chapter donated a new one, along with the matching dryer.

OCAPDD's "Helping Hand Fund" Esablished
In 2011, the Chapter was thrilled to donate $5,000.00 to the Ottawa-Carleton Association for Persons with Developmental Disabilities, our focus recipient for our fall fundraiser. This money was used to start the "Helping Hand Fund," a supplementary fund to help residential clients pay for necessities such as clothing, personal care items, household items, etc.
Gazebo for Queensway Carleton Hospital
In 2007, we were pleased to donate $10,000.00 to the Queensway Carleton Hospital to build a permanent wooden gazebo for their long-term mental health patients. The dedication ceremony was held in June of 2008. In 2010, working in conjunction with the students in the Building Construction Department of Algonquin College, we commissioned the design and construction of two wheel chair accessible picnic tables. We capped off this project by donating a BBQ and cooking tools so patients can take part in outdoor cookouts, a wonderful Canadian summertime ritual.

P-Js for students at Deer Lake First Nations School
Chapter members participated in a sewing bee, making each child in our adopted kindergarten class in Deer Lake some warm, cozy pyjamas. Members continue today, knitting hats, mittens, scarves, etc for our adopted students in Northern Ontario.
Guide Dog for the Visually Impaired
In 1989, IODE Walter Baker Chapter was excited to donate the funds necessary to sponsor a guide dog for the blind. Members were invited to the newly built Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind National Training Facility in Manotick, Ontario to present the cheque, tour the facilities and to participate in visually-impaired simulation exercises. The Chapter has since maintained its connection with the C.G.D.B.
In 1994, the Chapter donated a commercial-sized barbeque to Chrysalis House, a local women’s abuse crisis shelter.
The Chapter provided furnishings and literature for the Counselling Room at the Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre (WOCRC). The Chaptaer also provided the funds for a Training Manual on the prevention of abuse of children and women for the WOCRC. This manual has since been distributed to shelters and resource centres throughout Canada.
The Chapter funded the production of a pamphlet on child abuse prevention for the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO).
